PCME is an accredited provider specializing in innovative continuing medical education solutions.
In 2007, an estimated 178,480 women and 2,030 men were diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,460 died from the disease. Ovarian cancer is less common, but the mortality rate is very high, with 22,430 new cases and 15,280 deaths in 2007. For both cancers, early detection and management can significantly improve survival; however, most women remain undiagnosed until they have advanced disease.
Oncology nurses are critical in the clinical management of advanced disease through their influence on treatment decisions and management of side effects. With the introduction of new chemotherapeutic and biologic agents given in a variety of combinations and schedules, oncology nurses must recognize potential side effects and consider additive toxicities. In addition to the role of managing patients, the oncology nurse also helps to recognize patients and family members at high-risk for breast and ovarian cancers. Understanding the principles of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, as well as the basic principles of risk assessment and management, will allow the oncology nurse to effectively evaluate and manage patients at risk, and counsel patients and family members to ultimately improve outcomes.
This CE Webcourse will examine the therapeutic challenges of advanced breast cancer and refractory ovarian cancer through case presentations and discuss the implications for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer risk assessment and management.
