Talking About Sex: Methods to Diagnose and
Manage Female Sexual Disorders
Release Date: October 9, 2009         Expiration Date: October 9, 2010
Talking About Sex takes a unique approach to the sensitive issue of female sexual well being. Combining a case-based format featuring video vignettes with brief didactic presentations and practical insights from the faculty, this hour-long webcourse is 'must-see' viewing for all health care professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge and their ability to engage their female patients about sexual well being.

OVERVIEW

Sexual health has been identified as a growing priority in improving patient care. In 2005, the World Health Organization recommended that "providers should receive training in human sexuality, to help them better address the sexual health needs of their clients." Despite this impetus, recent data show that only 3% of physicians actually ask about sexuality in their patients. Several medical associations have identified the improvement of physician communication skills as an educational priority, as many clinicians feel they have received improper training in this area. Meanwhile, data show that routine evaluation of sexual health has the potential to decrease morbidity and mortality, and enhance the well-being and longevity of patients' lives.

This program will give health care providers an enhanced understanding of the value of sexual health on patients' outcomes and quality of life.

  • Clinicians will learn through real-world examples ways to explore and lead a conversation about sexual function.
  • Clinical scenarios and a video vignette will help clinicians reflect on and adapt an appropriate and respectful approach to their female patients.
  • Dr. Sarrel will discuss ways to engage and control the dialogue about sexual function.
  • Dr. Clayton will explain the importance of evaluating sexual well-being as part of an overall patient evaluation.
  • The faculty will present several tools to obtain clinically meaningful information.

Clinicians will discover that a thorough understanding of patients' sexual histories, combined with appropriate management and counseling strategies, will ultimately contribute to an increase in positive clinical outcomes.
